How much an AI agent costs for a business (2026)

An AI agent has a one-time build cost and monthly usage costs for the model, WhatsApp and phone. This guide shows what drives each one and how to calculate whether the agent pays for itself.

In short: the cost of an AI agent for a business has two parts worth separating: what you pay once to build it and what you pay every month to run it. At Atomix, building one starts at USD 3,000 and maintaining it starts at USD 300 a month, with a free working demo in 24 to 48 hours before we quote. Monthly usage (the AI model, WhatsApp messages, phone minutes) depends on volume and is estimated from your real numbers, not an average.

This article breaks down the costs of an agent, explains what each one depends on and gives you a simple way to calculate whether the project pays for itself.

The two parts of the cost

An agent isn't bought like desktop software. It has a build cost and an operating cost, and each one behaves differently.

What raises or lowers the build price

The same label, "customer support agent," can be a small project or a large one. What moves the number is this:

  • How many tasks it handles. Answering frequently asked questions is one thing; also booking, collecting payments and checking orders is another.
  • How many systems it connects to. Each connection to your management system, calendar or store is work. An integration is a connection between two programs so they pass data without you doing it by hand.
  • How many channels it serves. WhatsApp, phone, web: each has its own particularities.
  • How organized your information is. If prices, policies and hours are scattered, they have to be organized first.
  • What rules your business has. Customer-specific discounts, exceptions, special terms: all of that has to be taught to the agent.
  • How much control you need. Dashboards to review conversations, alerts, handoff to a person.

What you pay every month

The AI model

Models are billed by usage. OpenAI, for example, measures billing in units, with separate rates for text, audio and images (gpt-realtime model page). An agent that only writes costs less per conversation than one that speaks. Providers change their rates often, so any published figure gets outdated quickly: ask for an estimate based on your volume and review it from time to time.

The channel: WhatsApp

WhatsApp charges per delivered message, depending on the message category and the recipient's country; messages customers send to the business are free (WhatsApp Business platform pricing, Meta). The categories are marketing, utility and authentication templates, and replies within the 24-hour customer service window. According to that documentation, starting October 1, 2026, utility messages sent within that window are also charged. For an agent that answers questions, most of the traffic is replies; the notices you start yourself (reminders, confirmations) are what add to the cost.

If you're still choosing a provider, the differences are worth comparing before you commit.

Phone

If the agent handles calls, each minute carries your telephony provider's rate, plus the cost of the voice model. It's the channel where the monthly cost depends most on volume.

Maintenance

An agent needs adjusting over time: prices change, new questions appear, a product gets added. It's worth budgeting a monthly fee: at Atomix, maintenance starts at USD 300 a month. There's a separate article with more detail on this: How much it costs to maintain custom software.

There's no single right answer. If your case fits comfortably into an off-the-shelf tool, start there. If you outgrow it in three months, you'll know exactly what it lacks.

How to calculate whether it pays for itself

A back-of-the-napkin calculation, with your numbers:

  1. Count the hours. How many hours a week does your team spend answering the same things over and over?
  2. Put a value on those hours using the real cost of your team.
  3. Add what you lose. After-hours inquiries nobody answers, customers who don't come back because the reply took too long.
  4. Estimate how much the agent would resolve. Be conservative: between half and two-thirds of the repetitive inquiries, not all of them.
  5. Subtract the monthly operating cost. What's left, divided into the build cost, is your payback period.

If the result is longer than a year, review the scope: it may be better to start with a single task.

Costs that often fall outside budgets

  • Organizing your information. Questions and answers, prices, policies.
  • Testing with real conversations before opening it to customers.
  • A verified WhatsApp account and the setup of message templates.
  • Your team's time to validate replies during the first few weeks.
  • Legal review of call recording or data handling, depending on where you operate.

Always ask what the budget you receive includes and what it doesn't. It's the same rule that applies to any software; we cover it in How much custom software costs in 2026.

How Atomix prices it

Atomix builds custom AI agents for business starting at USD 3,000 for the agent, plus monthly maintenance from USD 300. The final price depends on how many tasks it handles, how many systems it connects to and how many channels it serves, and it is fixed before work starts. Before we quote, we build a free working demo in 24 to 48 hours so you can see the agent working on a case of yours. Most projects reach production in under a month. Usage costs (model, WhatsApp, phone) are paid to the providers based on your consumption and are estimated in the proposal.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an AI agent cost per month?

It depends on how many conversations or minutes it handles. A text agent on WhatsApp with moderate volume has a low monthly usage cost compared with a dedicated employee; a voice agent with many calls costs more. The right approach is to estimate it with your real volume and review it after the first month.

Is it a one-time payment or is there a recurring fee?

Both. The build is paid once (at Atomix, from USD 3,000), and every month you pay maintenance (from USD 300) plus usage to the model and channel providers. An agent without adjustments gets outdated.

Can I start with something smaller?

Yes, and that's usually the recommended path: one channel and one task, such as booking appointments or answering the ten most frequent questions. You can expand later based on what real conversations show.

What if the model price goes up?

Provider rates change, and neither you nor we control them. The risk is managed with a design that lets you switch models if it makes sense, and with monthly monitoring of spending.

How do I know I won't overpay?

Ask for a written estimate with volume assumptions, a spending cap with your providers and a dashboard showing how much is being used. If someone promises zero operating cost, be skeptical.

If you want an estimate based on your numbers, book a call and we'll show you a working demo at no cost.
